The rules of the 24 hour comic are simple. Create 24 pages of a comic in 24 hours. Story, art, inks, everything completed in one full day. Sleep if you’d like, but that means less time for comic making. This is what I produced in the same 24 hours. Except I slept for 3 hours and I actually didn’t finish inking. In total, I wrote the story, sketched the thumbnails, penciled the pages and inked about 5 pages. I could have inked the remaining 19 pages but they would have been total shit. The story is simple (maybe too simple) and inspired by the Roland La Serie classic, “El Muerto Vivo.” I even include the lyrics of the song in the story. Can I get sued for that? It is also inspired by the lives of Salsa artists who cosplayed as gangsters of the genre (see Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe album art), even though they may have been far from that in real life. The final piece, hidden in the subtext, is the role of the Nicaraguan contras in San Francisco that trafficked cocaine (see Gary Webb’s Dark Alliance or the movie with Jeremy Renner). This one might be a stretch, but you read this far and now you know. I hope you enjoyed my first 24 hour comic. If not, I’m sorry I wasted a whole 10 minutes of your life (I wasted a lot more time than that just inking the damn thing).

  2. Wow! I am really impressed by the pacing, the drawing, and what I learned from this. Granted, I did need to read the explanation to get the references, but I could see them there.
